FORD EXPLORER: AN AMERICAN SUCCESS STORY

HAZELWOOD, Mo., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- St. Louis assembly plant employees will be building a proven winner when they begin production of the Ford Explorer in January 1995.
Despite new competition, Explorer posted a record 306,681 sales last year -- up more than 56,000 units or 22 percent over 1991. Explorer surpassed the combined volume of its two closest rivals (Chevy S10 Blazer and Jeep Cherokee) by 30,000 units and outsold all 11 import entries in the segment combined by 127,000 units.
Explorer, which has more than 85 percent domestic content, claimed compact utility leadership for the third straight year in 1992 with 31.2 percent of the segment. Explorer sales represented 6.3 percent of the total truck industry.
To date, Ford Motor Company had built more than 800,000 Explorers for sale in the U.S., Canada and export markets since the vehicle was introduced as a 1991 model.
In its 1992 New Vehicle Buyer Study, Ford discovered the following information about Explorer buyers:
-- 57 percent replaced a car with their purchase.
-- Two-thirds previously owned a non-Ford product. (Only one-third replaced a Ford product -- car or truck -- with an Explorer.)
-- 91 percent said they were "completely or very satisfied" with their vehicle.
-- Selected demographics: Median age, 40; median incomns.
The Explorer lineup offers XL, Sport and Eddie Bauer two-door models, and XL, XLT and Eddie Bauer four-door models in either two- or four-wheel-drive models.
All 1993 models include a standard four-wheel anti-lock brake system.
