FORD CHAIRMAN: NATIONAL HEALTH-CARE REFORM ESSENTIAL

DEARBORN, Mich., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Following is a statement by Harold A. Poling, chairman and chief executive officer, Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F):
The quality of American health care overall is the best in the world, but it also is the most expensive. Persistently rising health- care costs have eroded the international competitiveness of American business.
Credit should go to President Clinton for finally forcing the issue -- his six principle plan is the most comprehensive and far reaching ever offered. Now the President and the Congress, Republicans and Democrats working together, need to pass a plan that provides coverage for all Americans, maintains quality and brings our spiraling health- care costs under control. The American people want health-care reform to be analyzed, debated fully and most importantly acted upon promptly. The country cannot wait any longer.
Ford Motor Company is pleased that the President has included the following elements in his proposal. In our view, they all need to be retained as a key part of U.S. efforts to compete successfully.
-- There should be limits on how much will be spent on health care.
Every household and business in America must control how much it
spends -- doesn't it make sense that we do this for health care?
-- Fairness requires that all employers should participate in the
program although there may need to be some relief for small
 businesses.
-- In all major nations with whom we compete, broad-based national
programs exist to provide coverage for retirees. Those workers,
who have provided strength to the country for decades, should
continue to have access to high-quality health care as part of a
 national solution.
-- A comprehensive benefit plan that includes prescription drugs for
the elderly who have been hit particularly hard by high drug
 costs.
