FORD ANNOUNCES SERVICE ACTION

DETROIT, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Owners of certain 1989- through 1993-model Taurus, Sable, and Continental vehicles originally sold or currently in use in 14 upper-Midwest and northeastern states and six eastern provinces of Canada are being notified by Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) of a voluntary safety recall. This is a supplement to a recall announced in 1993 involving 1986- through 1988-model Taurus/Sable vehicles and 1988-model Continentals.
In regions where vehicles are exposed to large amounts of road salts and moisture, either or both body mounts at the rear corners of the subframe that supports the engine and transmission may corrode and separate. If both mounts separate, the rear of the subframe can drop and steering may become difficult.
Ford is aware of one report of this condition in the U.S. and four in Canada, none of which allege an accident or injury, for the vehicles covered by this supplement.
About 1.1 million vehicles are affected by this supplement. States included are Maine, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. In Canada, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec provinces are included.
Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by first-class mail and asked to return their vehicles to the dealership for installation of reinforcement plate and replacement of the attaching bolts. This service will require about an hour, but dealerships may need to keep vehicles longer to accommodate service schedules.
