FORD ALTERNATIVE FUEL VEHICLES FIRST IN FLORIDA

NAPLES, Fla., June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Florida's first clean-burning Alternative Fuel Vehicles arrive today, thanks to the Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) and the Collier County Sheriff's Office.
Ford delivered 25 1993 Taurus Flexible Fuel Vehicles (FFV) to the Collier County sheriff today in ceremonies held at Ford's Florida Evaluation Center in Naples. The vehicles will be used in rigorous daily patrols throughout the county during the next three years.
The Taurus FFVs are optimized to operate on up to 85-percent methanol (M85), unleaded gasoline, or any combination of the two fuels. When run on M85, the vehicles can reduce smog-forming pollutants by up to 50 percent. Methanol -- an alcohol-based fuel manufactured from coal or natural gas -- can also help reduce the nation's dependence on foreign petroleum.
The Collier County sheriff will use 22 of the 25 Taurus FFVs as regular patrol cars, while the remaining three will be used as miscellaneous support vehicles. To effectively evaluate the potential environmental and economic benefits of M85 as an alternative fuel, 16 of the vehicles will operate on M85 only, three will run on unleaded gasoline only and six will operate on a mixture of M85 and unleaded gasoline.
At the heart of the Taurus FFV is a flexible fuel sensor that automatically detects the percent of methanol in the fuel and signals the on-board computer to adjust the spark timing and fuel flow accordingly. No matter what percent of methanol is present in the fuel, no special action is required on the part of the driver to maintain optimal performance and efficiency.
In accepting the 25 Taurus FFVs, Collier County Sheriff Don Hunter said, "Environmental problems are not limited to the Los Angeles area. In Collier County, we want to play a meaningful role in cleaning the air we all breathe, and these Taurus FFVs make a direct contribution to cleaner air."
Ford began regular production of the Taurus FFV earlier this year. More than 2,500 are currently being purchased by fleet and retail customers in California, where the M85 refueling infrastructure is more fully developed than in other states. In addition to the 2,500 production vehicles, 241 1993 Taurus FFVs will be placed in demonstration fleets in several states, including the 25 delivered today to the Collier County sheriff.
"Ford's work in the area of alternative fuel vehicles is aggressive and diverse," said Harvey I. Klein, manager of Advanced Vehicle and Safety Planning for Ford Motor Company. "With the development and production of these Taurus FFVs and ongoing development of other alternative fuel vehicles due out in the coming years, Ford Motor Company is at the leading edge of a revolution in automotive transportation."
The Ford Taurus FFVs used by the Collier County sheriff all feature 3.0-liter V6 engines for optimal performance and efficiency. Modifications include redesigned fuel system components, such as fuel pump lines, to improve reliability and durability when operated on the more corrosive M85, and a larger 20.7-gallon fuel tank for improved range. In addition, a cold-weather start system allows the Taurus FFV to start in cold weather when fueled with lower volatility M85.
Ford is currently involved in three demonstration programs featuring 1989 Crown Victoria, 1991 Taurus and 1992 E250 Econoline Flexible Fuel Vehicles. The 678 vehicles in these evaluations have logged over 11 million miles.
