FORD'S MOTORCRAFT GROUP LAUNCHES LEAD-ACID BATTERY RECYCLING DRIVE
DEARBORN, Mich., April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- It's time for a spring cleaning and for the second consecutive year, Ford Motor Company's Motorcraft battery group is organizing events across the country in a lead-acid battery recycling effort in honor of Earth Day 1992. Most of the events, in more than 40 cities, will take place on Saturday, April 25.
Residents in these cities are encouraged to use this "spring cleaning" opportunity to properly recycle spent vehicle batteries. Unlike paper, plastic, aluminum and scrap metal, spent lead-acid batteries represent a separate recycling opportunity for residents, communities and recycling coordinators.
"The Motorcraft Servicing Battery Distributor (SBD) Program has made responsible battery handling its No. 1 priority," said Paul Lansingh, Motorcraft battery product manager for Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F).
In its 1991 Earth Day effort, Motorcraft SBDs worked in 26 cities, collecting nearly 10 tons of batteries from which spent lead, polyprophylene, and electrolyte were used in the manufacture of new vehicle batteries. Over 94 percent of a spent lead-acid battery is completely recyclable.
"Maintaining good environmental practices in the communities in which we operate is the absolute key to success," Lansingh said. "If we want to continue to be an environmental leader in the battery business, we must continue to educate everyone on the importance of proper spent battery handling."
Programs like this have helped to improve the overall battery recycling rate to 90 percent, according to the Battery Council International. With reclamation rates as low as 75 percent in 1989, the entire battery industry has worked together to collect, recycle and reuse.
Motorcraft hopes to work with communities throughout the year in a continuous effort to recycle 100 percent of consumer-generated spent lead-acid batteries.
"If we continue these efforts, in unison with the rest of the industry, specialized battery recycling drives will not be necessary," Lansingh said.
Ford Parts and Service Division markets automotive lead-acid batteries and other replacement parts, including spark plugs, oil filters, and more, under the Motorcraft trade name.
