 FORBES FEATURES ARBY'S GEOGRAPHICS
 TECHNOLOGY FOR SITING NEW RESTAURANTS
MIAMI BEACH, Fla., Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- In its Jan. 6 issue, Forbes magazine spotlights companies using geographics to locate customers and competitors.
Arby's, the world's largest roast beef sandwich chain, is featured in the story for a sophisticated computer mapping system that allows the chain to site restaurants in optimum locations.
The article points out that a number of different industries are now using geographic information systems (GIS) to evaluate business potential by examining available information such as population demographics, competition placement, customer and labor sources, and traffic patterns.
Featured in the Forbes article is Arby's vice president of Development Research Hal Reid, who shows examples of the chain's mapping system measuring average annual food expenditures per household by zip code, per capita income, and competition placement within specific trade areas. In addition, Reid recently was featured in GIS World for Arby's geographics system.
Arby's GIS technology helped the fast-food chain open 220 new restaurants in 1990 and 250 in 1991. The company projects 3,800 units by 1997, up from its current 2,500. Ninety percent of Arby's restaurants are franchised.
Arby's has restaurants in the United States, Canada, Asia, Mexico, Australia and the Caribbean. In 1990, the company reached a record $1.43 billion in sales, a 9 percent increase over the previous year. Founded in 1964 with 20 employees, Arby's today has 72,000 employees worldwide and commitments for a total of 3,150 restaurants. Arby's is ranked as an industry leader in areas such as technology, product marketing, nutritional and consumer information, and community service.
