FOR THE LOVE OF FALL FOLIAGE, BEWARE OF TICKS; EXPERT ADVISES HOW TO WARD 'EM OFF, KEEP 'EM OFF

STONY POINT, N.Y., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- You can greatly reduce, if not entirely eliminate, the danger of tick bites that goes with a romp through the woods to enjoy the fall foliage, says Richard Gadd.
Gadd, whose company, SCS, Ltd., specializes in anti-tick products, believes the best remedy is awareness of the health hazard, particularly at this time, and of ways to ward off ticks.
"When you delight in the autumn leaf spectacular, you can at the same time make certain that some tiny tick isn't enjoying you," says Gadd.
The spread of Lyme disease through East Coast states has made tick prevention even more important, says Gadd. And ticks remain active in the fall -- until the temperature gets below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
"In fact, fall is when adult ticks are the most active," says Gadd. "And you may not even know it when they attach because they can do so without pain or discomfort."
 Gadd suggests these precautions:
-- Stay on paths and avoid grassy and overgrown areas.
-- Wear light colored clothing so that ticks can be seen and brushed off.
-- Wear long pants. Tuck the cuffs into your socks. Keep your shirt tucked into your pants.
-- Check yourself, your kids and pets often and thoroughly. Ticks are tiny but they aren't invisible. You can spot them.
Gadd recommends use of a tick repellent, Coulston's Duranon Tick Repellent/Killer(TM) ($5.99) on clothing and shoes. He says it repelled and killed all ticks in tests and that it lasts 2 weeks even after washing. A similar Coulston's spray is available for dogs.
But if precautions fail, quick removal of a tick is the best measure. To do this quickly and easily, Gadd offers a new and simple tool called the Pro-Tick Remedy(TM) ($3.00 post paid).
