FOR LIMITED TIME ONLY PUBLIC CAN TOUR INDIAN VILLAGE SITE.

Byline: Daily News

TEHACHAPI - An American Indian village site will open for weekend guided tours by the public beginning Sept. 21.

The California State Parks, Mojave Desert Sector operates Tomo-Kahni State Historic Park, which is in the hills east of Tehachapi. The park is open to the public only through guided tours, led by trained docents, to protect against vandalism.

No structures remain on the site, but rock rings mark the locations of many of the kahnis, or homes, that were built of juniper boughs by the Kawaiisu people.

Tomo-Kahni means ``winter home'' in the Kawaiisu language. Hundreds of mortar holes - where acorns and pine nuts were ground for food - also tell of an active past.

The guided tours involve a moderately strenuous hike. Tours are provided at 9 a.m. Saturdays during the spring and fall months only.

They will continue, weather permitting, until Nov. 16. Tours are limited to 12 people. Each lasts approximately four hours.

Reservations must be made through the Lancaster state park office, which is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays at (661) 942-0662. The cost is $3 for adults and $1 for children ages 6-16. Children under 6 are free but the tour is not recommended for them.
