FOR ENTERTAINING, FLOWERS OFFER BUDGET-CONSCIOUS WAYS TO SPRUCE UP
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- For people looking for a new look while entertaining or trying to find a remodeling short cut, there is a stylish, inexpensive answer: decorating with flowers and plants.
"Working with a florist, anyone can use flowers to define an interior space. They can create or complement a country kitchen, a '30s-style bedroom or chintz-filled living room," explained Charles F. Kremp 3rd, florist and chairman of the American Floral Marketing Council (AFMC).
Many Americans Already Decorate With Flowers
Decorating with flowers and plants makes sense. Plants can brighten a room; flowers can add a touch of romance. More importantly, they are a home decorating tool that doesn't break a budget. People can bring their own vases to florists for arrangements -- or buy cut flowers to spread throughout the house.
AFMC florists offer some specific tips on using flowers to decorate or entertain:
-- Entry hall: Flowers and plants warmly welcome people into your home. Ask your florist to design an arrangement for an entryway table -- or create a bouquet of tied flowers that can drape over a mirror or picture frame during a party.
-- Dining room: Most people can recall a dinner where tall arrangements prevented people from seeing each other. Make sure flowers add to the mood of the gathering. Consider a tied bouquet that lies on the table as a centerpiece or small, intimate arrangements around low candles. Or a florist can design a full, formal arrangement that still allows your guests to see and talk to each other.
-- Coffee table: A simple arrangement for a coffee table creates a fresh focal point for a living room. Set the tone for a party with an arrangement that is grand, low key or sophisticated. This arrangement can be either low or tall, since people are moving around the room.
-- Mantel: This is a classic area for flowers -- and a perfect place to set a theme. Cut flowers or an arrangement can work around candles, frames or sit alone.
-- Other spots for flowers: Don't forget adding flowers as an accent for guest rooms or powder rooms. The arrangement does not have to be elaborate -- a simple bud base or small flowering plant is appropriate.
