FOOTBALL: GILLS SNAP UP TAYLOR.

FORMER England Under-21 boss Peter Taylor is the new manager of Second Division Gillingham.

Taylor takes over just a week after the Gills sacked former chief Tony Pulis, who has since taken over as Bristol City's new boss.

It means a swift return to management for Taylor, who controversially lost his England job despite the success of his Under-21 sides.

Taylor said: "The England job was a great experience for me, but that's gone now. I learned a lot from working with Glenn Hoddle. I'll be bringing my own ideas but the club were very successful last season so I'd be an idiot to change too many things.

"Tony Pulis did a superb job here. I'm going to take over the hard work he put in."

Gills skipper Andy Hessenthaler has been appointed player-coach under Taylor.
