FOOTBALL: WENGER SALUTES A LEGEND.
ARSENE WENGER has paid tribute to David Seaman - and described him a legend in English sport.
Wenger admitted to being surprised at news that his former Arsenal and England keeper has decided to retire.
But he believes the whole country will pay tribute to a remarkable career with both club and country. He said: "I want to personally thank David for what he has done at Arsenal. He will certainly be remembered as a legend in English sport.
"I would think that everyone in England will feel that way and thank him for what he has done in his career. He was not only a great goalkeeper but also had a great attitude and his fair play was outstanding."
Wenger was away in Paris yesterday when he heard the news of Seaman's retirement.
He said: "It was a complete surprise and maybe it shows that the injury he received recently was serious.
"It is big loss to English football because he is a fantastic keeper. But it is also a wise decision. He realised that carrying on could be a danger to his health and his body."
Wenger believes Seaman will stay in the game in some capacity, possibly as a goalkeeping coach. He added: "I know that David enjoys his media work but he could also be a goalkeeping coach as well. I think he will split his time between the two."
