FOOTBALL: VOLLEY OF THE KINGS; Charlton 2 Leicester 0 : Bartlett hits Di Canio-style wonder goal.

Byline: JOHN CROSS

CHARLTON striker Shaun Bartlett hit a contender for Goal of the Season - to help clinch a permanent pounds 2m move to The Valley.

South African Bartlett struck a stunning 82nd-minute volley as Charlton kept alive their European dream.

And England full-back Chris Powell celebrated the wonder goal by lifting his shirt to reveal a T-shirt which read: `R.I.P. Rocky' to mourn the death of his pal, David Rocastle.

Bartlett is still sweating on his own Premiership future as he is on loan from FC Zurich and the clubs have not agreed a fee yet.

Charlton boss Alan Curbishley said: "It was definitely our goal of the season. It's something you practise in training and either goes 10 feet over or straight into the corner.''

The strike rivalled Paolo Di Canio's superb volley for West Ham against Wimbledon which won Goal of the Season last year.

Curbishley added: "We've spoken to Bartlett's club and we'll sit down and talk again in the summer, but it's probably just down to the chairman now to sign the cheque.''

Charlton's victory - with Andy Todd grabbing the opener - was watched by Sven Goran Eriksson, and Curbishley admitted he is aware of speculation that he may be asked to replace Steve McClaren on the England coaching staff.

He said: "We'll see what happens in the summer.''
