FOOTBALL: SAM'S AIR RAID FOR BOBIC.

Byline: ALAN NIXON

BOLTON boss Sam Allardyce has flown out to Germany for a personal meeting with Borussia Dortmund striker Fredi Bobic to persuade him to join his club.

Allardyce has been trying to sign the 30-year-old former international for weeks and decided a face-to-face 'hard sell' was his best hope.

The ambitious Bolton chief was upset about reports from Bobic's agent that the striker was 'not too thrilled' about the way Wanderers play and wanted to put the record straight. Allardyce is willing to make him the top-paid player at the Reebok Stadium to pull off the coup.

Bobic will give an answer in the next few days but was impressed that Allardyce made the effort to visit him when Bolton had the weekend off from FA Cup duties.

Borussia are believed to be willing to waive a fee on the striker to help him find a new club.

PRESTON midfielder Mark Rankine is facing a long lay-off after breaking his foot in training.

Experienced Rankine could be out for up to two months, leaving boss Davie Moyes's squad thin on the ground for their promotion play-off push. Rankine has been a regular in the North End side and Moyes is now urgently looking for a player on loan to take his place.

SECOND Division strugglers Cambridge have appointed John Taylor manager on a permanent basis.

Taylor, who took over as caretaker coach from John Beck on November 22, has failed to lift the club out of the relegation zone in his nine games in charge but has steered them to the LDV Vans Trophy Southern Area final after a 2-0 win at home to Barnet yesterday.
