FOOTBALL: Rush to recover cost me my place.

STEVE GUPPY last night revealed he was so determined to be fit for last Sunday's Old Firm showdown he injured his back in training.

The former Leicester City winger had made an impressive start to the season and had been enjoying his best spell of form since his move to Glasgow last August.

But he was gutted to miss out on the first Old Firm meeting of the campaign after overdoing it in the build-up to the game.

Guppy said: "One of the reasons I ended up out was because it was such a big game and I was so desperate to be fit for it.

"I think I overdid it a bit and my back ended up going into spasms. It was disappointing to miss the game but I feel a lot better now.

"It was frustrating, especially since it was such a great match, but hopefully I'll be involved in other Old Firm matches this season.

"I'm back running and when the rest of the lads come back from inter- national duty I'm hoping to be able to join in full training.

"At the minute I'm hoping to be fit for the Hearts game at Tynecastle a week on Sunday but we'll have to see how it goes between now and then.

"I've been enjoying this season, it's been nice to be more involved and I'm hoping I can force my way back into the team."
