FOOTBALL: EURO 2004: SCOTLAND v ICELAND, TOMORROW, 3PM: WINNIE: BERTI MUSTN'T BE DUPED BY ATLI'S DEFEATISM.. HE'S JUST TRYING TO KID US.

Byline: ROBERT MARTIN

SCOTLAND spy David Winnie last night warned Berti Vogts not to get sucked in by the mind games of Iceland boss Atli Edvaldsson.

Winnie, drafted in by Vogts to help Scotland's preparations, played under Edvaldsson for two years at KR Reykjavik. And he smiled when he learned that Edvaldsson has already written off his side's chances of upsetting the Scots at Hampden tomorrow.

But the defender, ironically freed by Dumbarton, where Scotland are training, reckons those claims should be taken with a pinch of salt.

He said: "Don't believe all this stuff about Iceland feeling they have no chance - Atli always has been very clever at mind games.

"It's all a plan to lull Scotland into a false sense of security. His brother Johannes still lives in Scotland so he knows the Scottish psyche very well.

"He knows that if you drop it in that Scotland are favourites, some of it will filter through and influence the way a player plays."

Winnie also believes Scotland will face a far tougher test at Hampden than they encountered when winning 2-0 in Iceland in October. And he revealed his advisor's role had upset people back in Iceland, where he is seen as cheating on Edvaldsson's men.

He said: "Berti is wise enough to know this for himself, but I've already told him that this will be a harder game than the one he faced in Iceland.

"If I can help Berti in some small way then great. I know some people in Iceland are not happy with me."
