FOODMAKER, INC. REPORTS FIRST QUARTER EARNINGS
SAN DIEGO, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Foodmaker, Inc. today reported

net earnings of $2.4 million for the first quarter, ended Jan. 19, 1992, compared with earnings of $392,000 during the same period a year ago. Foodmaker is the operator and franchisor of JACK IN THE BOX (R) restaurants and Chi-Chi's (R) Mexican restaurants. Total revenues for the quarter were $366.9 million, an increase of 6.7 percent from revenues of $343.8 million in the first quarter of fiscal 1991.
First quarter per store average sales for comparable company- operated JACK IN THE BOX restaurants (PSA) increased 2.7 percent over the same quarter last year. During the latter part of the quarter, the PSA for comparable restaurants improved more significantly.
Chi-Chi's first quarter per store average sales for comparable company-operated restaurants declined 1.8 percent vs. the same quarter last year. However, sales trends at Chi-Chi's showed marked improvement as the first quarter progressed and ended the quarter with positive comparisons.
"Sales trends are encouraging in both of our chains," says Chairman Jack W. Goodall. "JACK IN THE BOX sales for the second quarter are off to a good start with the introduction of our New Finger Foods, which include Spicy Chicken Wings, Mini Chimichangas and Toasted Raviolis," he adds.
Foodmaker, Inc. operates and franchises 1,099 JACK IN THE BOX fast food restaurants located principally in the western and southwestern United States. While classified in the fast food hamburger segment of the restaurant industry, JACK IN THE BOX offers a wider menu selection than most of its major fast food competitors. JACK IN THE BOX menu items are developed to appeal to the changing preferences of its adult guests.
As the nation's largest chain of Mexican full-service restaurants, Chi-Chi's operates 178 restaurants and franchisees operate an additional 48 restaurants. Chi-Chi's restaurants serve high-quality, moderately priced Mexican food and alcoholic beverages in a festive atmosphere designed to appeal to a family clientele.
