FOOD LION DONATES TO COLUMBIA, S.C., URBAN LEAGUE

SALISBURY, N.C., Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Food Lion, the nations' fastest growing supermarket chain, announced today that it will donate more than 300 pounds of food to the Columbia, S.C., Urban League. Food Lion has consistently donated to the organization's Christmas Basket Program for needy families.
In announcing the donation, Food Lion Vice President Vince Watkins said: "Food Lion is dedicated to helping those in need and, in fact, donated more than $750,000 in 1991 alone. This year of course we donated more than 2 million pounds of food to Florida's Hurricane Andrew victims, and our employees generously gave more than $115,000 to The American Red Cross. Food Lion perhaps best helps those in need, though, by offering the best products at the lowest possible prices," he concluded. Watkins questioned earlier reports that Food Lion would not be donating to the organization and apologized for any confusion the reports may have caused.
Food Lion is the nation's fastest growing supermarket chain operating more than 1,000 stores in 14 states across the country.
