FOOD LION CORRECTS RADIO NETWORK'S UNSUBSTANTIATED REPORT

FOOD LION CORRECTS RADIO NETWORK'S UNSUBSTANTIATED REPORT
SALISBURY, N.C., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- "Yesterday, the North Carolina News Radio Network issued a unsubstantiated news report to its 75 stations stating that Food Lion sells flatfish such as flounder or fluke fish under 13 inches in length, implying it is against the law in North Carolina. This statement is flat wrong and we can prove it. The report also stated that some grocers in the state sold imported crabmeat with rodent droppings -- implying that Food Lion was one of these companies. This is also flat wrong and we can prove it," said Vince Watkins, vice president of corporate communications, Food Lion.
"Food Lion, has never purchased any crab meat from China. All fresh crabmeat sold at approximately 10 of our seaside stores during the summer months is domestic, caught off the N.C. coastline and purchased from a domestic company -- Quality Seafood in Elizabeth City, N.C. Quality Seafood is the only seafood company in the entire state that has a seafood inspector from the U.S. Department of Commerce on the premise fulltime," continued Watkins.
"Imitation crabmeat which is sold at most restaurants and grocery store chains, such as Food Lion, is made of pollack fish or flatfish, eggs, salt, cornstarch, seasonings and water. Food Lion's initiation crabmeat is also purchased in this country. The second unsubstantiated charge that Food Lion sells undersized flounder or flatfish is also flat wrong and we can prove it. Food Lion also purchases its flatfish from Quality Seafood in North Carolina and always within the requirements of the law," added Watkins.
"We trust that in the future all news agencies will give Food Lion the opportunity to tell the truth and set the facts straight before they run a news story, not after," concluded Watkins.
