FOOD INDUSTRY URGES CONGRESS TO RATIFY NAFTA

WASHINGTON, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Food Processors Association (NFPA) has urged Congress to ratify the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) as soon as possible.
"While trade agreements are seldom perfect, NAFTA sets the stage for beneficial trade growth for each of the signatory countries," NFPA President and CEO John R. Cady said in an Oct. 15 letter to each member of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.
Cady said eliminating trade barriers between the United States and Mexico -- America's third largest trading partner -- will create new opportunities for growth in the production and export of U.S. processed foods. "U.S. food processors are extremely productive and competitive, and our members look forward to greater opportunities to export to Mexico," Cady said.
Observing that the Mexican economy is growing "and Mexican consumers are increasingly more affluent with a taste for things American," Cady said NFPA's members "are poised to take advantage of NAFTA opportunities to benefit our economy and U.S. workers."
NFPA is the scientific voice of the food industry, focusing exclusively on food issues. The association's three laboratories serve NFPA's 500 member companies, manufacturers of the nation's processed- packaged fruits and vegetables, meat and poultry, seafood, juices and drinks and specialty products.
