FOCUS ON HOUSING SCHEME.

The Congress- led UPA government has its eyes set on a significant section of voting population in the urban centres across the country with a plan to tweak the funding pattern of its ambitious Rajiv Awas Yojana.

The scheme being implemented by the union ministry of housing and poverty alleviation aims at coming up with slum- free urban centres with subsidised housing for poor and marginalised communities. The scheme, which is to be implemented in phases, has a first phase budget of around ` 5,000 crore and hopes to reach to around 10 crore people, who will be in urban slums for next four years. The projects under the scheme are funded in a 50: 50 ratio between the Centre and the states. The 50 per cent cost at the state's end is shared among states, civic bodies and individual beneficiaries.
