FNC debates child custody of non-Emirati mothers.

Al Shamsi noted that many Emirati men marry foreigners who eye the better life here. But most such marriages often fail.

Abu Dhabi -- A lengthy debate on child custody of non-Emirati mothers dominated as the Federal National Council, chaired by Speaker Mohammed Ahmed Al Murr, met on Tuesday in the Capital.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Justice Sultan bin Saeed Al Badi and Minister of State for Financial Affairs Obaid Humaid Al Tayer and officials from Etisalat. Raising the child custody issue, member Ahmed Al Shamsi asked for a relevant law to be amended to prevent non-Emirati mothers from taking custody of children. He argued the custody should be given to Emirati fathers.

Al Shamsi said: "Federal Law 28 of 2005 has to be amended and exclude mothers who are not of the same religion as their child and those who are not Emiratis." He said the aim was to assure the children do not lose their national identity. In response, Al Badi said the issue pertains to legal and legislative principles and is designed to take children's welfare into consideration.

Al Shamsi noted that many Emirati men marry foreigners who eye the better life here. But most such marriages often fail.

The council discussed other issues, including the 2014-1015 Budget and Etisalat striking a contract with Spain's Barcelona Football Club.
