FMC CORPORATION SELECTS DELFZIJL, THE NETHERLANDS FOR A NEW PLANT IN EUROPE

BRUSSELS, Switzerland, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- FMC Corporation (NYSE: FMC) announced today that Delfzijl, in the Groningen Province of the Netherlands, has been chosen for the site of its new 35,000 T/yr Hydrogen Peroxide Plant.
The plant will be situated at the Port of Delfzijl, an industrial area where several chemical plants are already sited.
This new plant will position FMC to meet growing demand in Northern and Central Europe and better serve its customers in the region. Hydrogen peroxide is used in bleaching wood pulp and textiles, as a chemical intermediate and, increasingly, in the treatment of drinking water and municipal and industrial wastes. Hydrogen peroxide is an environmentally friendly product that decomposes to water and oxygen.
Delfzijl has been selected following a study of 36 regions in Northern Europe and a detailed evaluation of eight sites. The major requirements which lead to the decision are the following:
-- Appropriate infrastructures and support given by local authorities to chemical industry manufacturers.
-- Current and projected availability of low cost raw materials and energy.
-- Availability of technical services and professional expertise required by a chemical plant.
-- Access to multiple, efficient and cost effective transportation systems for product distribution.
-- Consistency of local environmental regulations with FMC's high corporate standards.
-- Support of local, regional and national authorities for FMC's projects which led to a successful conclusion.
Basic engineering for the project has been completed by FMC and a contract has been awarded to a local established engineering firm who will assist FMC with the detailed engineering, procurement and construction management of the project.
Commercial operations are expected to begin in late 1995. The engineering and construction of the plant will employ about 300 persons. The plant, when completed, will result in about 100 permanent jobs in the operation and maintenance of the plant and in the distribution of products.
FMC is a leading international producer of hydrogen peroxide with plants in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Thailand and Spain, where it has a substantial operation including a hydrogen peroxide plant in La Zaida, Spain.
FMC Corporation, headquartered in Chicago, is one of the world's leading producers of machinery and chemicals for industry, government and agriculture. The company operates 88 manufacturing and mine facilities in 24 U.S. states and 14 other countries. The company divides its businesses into five major segments: industrial chemicals, precious metals, defense systems, performance chemicals, and machinery and equipment.
FMC also has a long-standing presence in Europe, with manufacturing facilities in Belgium, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
