FLUOR DANIEL AWARDED CONTRACT BY FORTRON INDUSTRIES

IRVINE, Calif., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Fluor Daniel announced today it has been awarded a contract to provide construction services for a polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) manufacturing facility in Wilmington, N.C., for Fortron Industries, a joint venture of Hoechst Celanese Corporation, and Kureha Chemical Industry Ltd. of Japan.
The value of the contract was not disclosed.
The new plant will be located on the periphery of the existing Cape Industries facility, and is designed to produce 3,600 metric tons of PPS, roughly one-third of the U.S. market. It will position Hoechst Celanese as a leading world supplier.
Work is currently under way at the site. The project is scheduled for completion in late 1993 and will employ approximately 300 workers.
High-tech PPS polymers are used in place of metals and are able to withstand the high heat of electronics and electrical switch applications. Their resistance to attack from all known chemicals makes them particularly suited for use in industrial and automotive under-the-hood applications.
Hoechst Celanese, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hoechst AG of Germany, holds leading positions in chemicals, fibers and film, the life sciences, advanced materials and technologies.
Kureha manufactures specialty chemicals, advanced materials and plastics.
Fluor Daniel Inc., the principal subsidiary of Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR), is an international engineering, construction, maintenance and technical services company with more than 50 offices worldwide.
