FLUOR DANIEL AND DAVY MCKEE AWARDED KENNECOTT UTAH COPPER CORP.'S
 SMELTER MODERNIZATION PROJECT
SAN FRANCISCO, June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Fluor Daniel Inc. and Davy McKee Corp. have been awarded a contract to provide engineering, procurement and construction management of Kennecott Corp.'s Utah Copper Smelter Modernization Project. The project includes detailed design and construction management of a 1.1 million tons per year copper concentrate smelting facility. The value of the contract is approximately $600 million.
The facility will be built just east of the existing smelter. It will be the cleanest, most environmentally efficient operation in the world, and will reduce emissions to a fraction of the allowable level in Utah's new air quality program.
Kennecott currently exports 40 percent of its copper concentrate. The new smelter will allow the company to process all of its concentrates at the Utah facility. Engineering and construction of the smelter and refinery will result in an additional 3,300 jobs during a three-year period. More than 500 Utah
companies will benefit through contracts created by the project. Construction is scheduled to begin in 1993, with a completion date set for 1995.
Fluor Daniel and Davy McKee have been on the forefront of copper smelting innovation for the past decade. Both companies recently completed work at Inco's Sulfur Abatement Project in Ontario, Canada. In addition, Davy has completed the Cyprus Miami Smelter Modernization in Arizona and the Asarco El Paso Smelter Modernization project in Texas. Fluor Daniel is currently performing services for the Hudson Bay Smelter Modernization in Manitoba, Canada.
