FLUKE ANTICIPATES LOWER RESULTS DUE TO ORDER WEAKNESS

EVERETT, Wash., March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- John Fluke Mfg. Co. Inc. (AMEX: FKM) announced today that order levels since the first of January are over 15 percent below the same period last year. The short-term projections for the remainder of the seven-month fiscal year, ending April 30, 1993, show little improvement.
Most of the weakness in orders is due to lower-than-expected business levels in Europe, Japan and Canada. Deteriorating economic conditions are adversely affecting order levels in these markets. Further reductions in government prime contractor, direct government and major commercial account spending are affecting orders in the United States. Also contributing to the shortfall is a sharp decline in orders for recently discontinued, non-strategic products.
The company expects these order levels to negatively affect revenues and earnings and, therefore, has taken several actions to lessen this impact. These actions include reducing employee headcount by approximately 125 people; temporary reductions in pay for all employees, including officers; closing of some facilities and various reductions in costs and expenses across the company.
"We continue to be disappointed with current order levels, are aggressively reducing our expenses and are accelerating new product programs," said Bill Parzybok, chairman and chief executive officer. "We do not see short-term order improvement. However, we continue to be optimistic as we enter new markets with new products, and feel confident that our mission, strategy and these new products will enhance growth and profitability."
Fluke's mission is to be the leader in compact, professional electronic test tools. The company focuses on customers in service, manufacturing test and quality functions in a variety of industries. Founded in 1948 and headquartered in Everett, Fluke produced revenues of $271.8 million in its most-recent fiscal year ended Sept. 25, 1992. Fluke is a publicly held company, traded under the symbol "FKM" on the American and Pacific Stock Exchanges.
