FLUKE ANNOUNCES REDUCTION IN MANUFACTURING POSITIONS
EVERETT, Wash., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- John Fluke Mfg. Co. Inc. (AMEX: FKM) announced today it has reduced its manufacturing workforce in the Verification Tools Division by approximately 50 employees.
This reduction is in response to a continual decline in orders for older product families that are primarily sold to defense and prime contractor customers. These customers represent a small segment of the Verification Tools Division's overall business.
"This action was taken only after careful consideration," said Dave Katri, vice president, Verification Tools Division. "However, the shifts in spending affecting some of our traditional T&M markets called for permanent structural change.
"In the face of this trend of reduced spending by defense and military aerospace customers, Fluke has been adjusting its business strat new market segments such as installation, maintenance and service of electrical equipment in a wide variety of industries.
The Verification Tools Division is one of three separate operating divisions, each with individual product charters aimed at furthering this mission.
Katri added, "Several interim measures were taken over the last year to preserve these positions, including reduced work weeks and job reassignments. However, the continuing sluggish economy has slowed down our ability to move employees into other parts of the company that are less dependent on the military sector. As business conditions improve, we would hope many of these employees would have the opportunity to rejoin the company under our job recall policy."
Fluke's mission is to be the leader in compact, professional electronic test tools. Fluke focuses on customers in service, manufacturing test, and quality functions in a variety of industries. Founded in 1948 and headquartered in Everett, Fluke employs more than 2,200 people worldwide, producing revenues of $239.7 million in its most recent fiscal year, ended Sept. 27, 1991.
Fluke is a publicly held company traded under the symbol "FKM" on the American Stock Exchange.
