FLSmidth Purchases Parts of AuTec from Barrick.
FLSmidth agreed to purchase the hydrometallurgical and mineral processing capabilities of AuTec Innovative Extractive Solutions Ltd., a subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corp. The sale includes related equipment and key personnel. Offers of employment will be made by FLSmidth to approximately 10 AuTec employees.
FLSmidth reported its Mineral Testing and Research Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, will work to continue AuTec's legacy.
Barrick leadership said the move will suit the unit well. "Finding a good home for these segments of AuTec's business with a trusted provider, capable of continuing to support the needs of our sites, was important for us," Greg Walker, head of operations and technical excellence, Barrick Gold, said. "With FLSmidth, we're confident we will have access to high-caliber expertise and the capabilities to meet various test work needs going forward."
With the purchase, FLSmidth will add capabilities of continuous pilot pressure oxidation, including subsequent leaching and downstream flowsheet, continuous flotation, column flotation, and benchtop roasting. These new capabilities will reinforce its position as a global leader in base and precious metal metallurgical test work and development, the company reported.
"We are very excited to combine the talent and experience of AuTec with our Mineral Testing and Research Center and we look forward to serving as an ongoing trusted test center for Barrick and other key miners," Wayne Douglas, head of the Mineral Testing and Research Center, FLSmidth, said. "This addition of capabilities will help us achieve our goal of being productivity provider No. 1 for our mining customers globally."
Closing is expected to occur near the end of Q1 2019, and will be subject to customary closing conditions.
Separately, FLSmidth reported it acquired parts of IMP Automation. The acquisition includes more than 130 IMP employees, to include the managing director. Also included in the transaction is IMP's 50% share in a joint venture that provides complete O&M-based solutions for automated labs.
The acquisition, expected to close in Q2 2019, is subject to closing conditions. The parties agreed not to disclose the terms of the transaction.
FLSmidth also reported it was contracted to expand Hindalco's Alumina Refinery in Odisha, India. The supplier will provide machinery and equipment for the 0.5 million-metric-tons-per-year extension of the world-class refinery of Utkal Alumina International Ltd. (UAIL) in Odisha.
The scope of the contract includes bauxite grinding, handling, mud washing, hydrate filtration and gas suspension calcination packages on an EPC basis, excluding civil works. FLSmidth is responsible for the design, engineering, manufacturing, supply and erection of these units.
The contract was finalized at a recent meeting of leadership for both companies. The project is to be completed by Q2 2020.
Hindalco is one of the largest integrated primary producers of aluminum in Asia.
