FLOWERS INDUSTRIES ELECTS NEW MEMBER TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS
THOMASVILLE, Ga., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Flowers Industries, Inc. (NYSE: FLO) announced today that its board of directors has elected Edward L. Baker of Florida Rock Industries, Inc. (AMEX: FRK) as a director.
The election was held at the board's regular quarterly meeting in Thomasville. With Baker's election, Flowers' board expands to 13 directors.
Edward Baker is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Florida Rock Industries, a publicly held construction materials company based in Jacksonville, Fla. The company produces and markets sand, gravel, crushed stone, concrete blocks, and other building materials throughout the Southeast. It operates plants in Florida, Georgia, Maryland and Virginia, and employs more than 2,800 people. In fiscal 1990, which ended Sept. 30, 1990, Florida Rock reported sales of $390 million.
Baker has been involved in mining and construction materials since he joined Shands & Baker, Inc., predecessor to Florida Rock Industries, as a sales engineer in 1960. In 1967, he became Shands & Baker president. The company changed its name to Florida Rock Industries in 1972. Baker held the post of president until 1989. That year he was elected chairman of the board and chief executive officer.
Baker also serves as a director of American Heritage Life Insurance Company, Barnett Bank of Jacksonville, N.A., Flint River Textiles, Inc., and The Regency Group.
"We are delighted to have a man of Mr. Baker's stature, competence, and compatibility join the Flowers Industries board," noted Amos R. McMullian, Flowers' chairman of the board and chief executive officer.
This is the second change made to Flowers' board of directors since last fall. At the annual meeting of shareholders in October 1991, shareholders elected G. Anthony Campbell, Flowers' secretary and general counsel, to the board. Campbell replaced retiring board member Richard J. Pavlik.
Flowers Industries, Inc. serves regional and national markets with a variety of quality branded food products, including fresh and frozen breads, buns, and rolls; cakes, pies, and snacks; and frozen fruit and specialty vegetables.
