 FLORIDA TO PLAY KEY ROLE
IN AT&T'S PREDICTED RECORD CALLING VOLUMES FOR CHRISTMAS DAY
MIAMI, Dec. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Florida will play a key role in AT&T's predicted record calling volumes for Christmas Day. AT&T is anticipating it will handle 94 million long-distance calls over its network, an increase of 10 percent over last year.
Christmas Day is typically the busiest holiday of the year for AT&T, followed by Mother's Day and then Father's Day. Calls in and out of Florida are among the highest volumes in the country because of the number of tourists at this time of year, the number of people who have relocated to work in the Sunshine state, and because of the number of retirees who now reside in the state.
One reason holiday calling may appear to be recession-proof is that long-distance prices have dropped consistently over the years. Forty years ago, a 10-minute daytime coast-to-coast Christmas Day call cost $6.84. AT&T's price for that same call this year is just $1.49.
AT&T's lower evening rates will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Dec. 25 -- a savings of 34 percent on average over its standard direct-dialed weekday prices. Holiday rates will apply to AT&T state-to-state calls from all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Subscribers to AT&T Reach Out(R) America calling plans will receive additional savings opportunities depending on which plan they have.
For those who can't wait until Christmas, AT&T is offering a special pre-holiday savings opportunity this year. From 5 p.m. this Friday (Dec. 13) to 5 p.m. this Sunday, any AT&T direct-dialed, state-to-state call within the United States is just 11 cents a minute. These rates do not apply to all calling plan calls.
 Christmas Calling Tips
To get the most benefit from your holiday calling, AT&T suggests that you:
-- Call between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. when calling within the United States. Calling volumes traditionally are lower. If calling internationally, consider calling Christmas Eve.
-- Dial directly, including international calls. Most customers can dial their own calls directly to 190 foreign countries and territories. Local telephone directories can help you determine whether or not you can dial a specific country directly. (AT&T customers who need international calling assistance can call 800-874-4000.)
-- Be sure you've reached your chosen long-distance company from public phones when traveling over the holidays. (AT&T customers need to listen for the AT&T name and, if they don't hear it, hang up and dial 10-ATT-0, then the number they're calling.)
