FLORIDA POWER MAKES EFFICIENCY MOVES

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Florida Power Corporation today announced several actions to streamline its operation and improve its efficiencies. The moves are in the face of increasing competition in the electric utility industry.
The power plant division of Florida Power Corporation, Energy Supply, is reducing its work force by approximately 20 percent and closing two of its smaller and less efficient electric generating plants.
Florida Power announced that in January 1994 it will mothball Turner Plant, located on Lake Monroe at Enterprise, Fla., north of Orlando, and Higgins Plant, located on upper Tampa Bay near Oldsmar. The two steam power plants have a total of 109 years' service. Together they provide a maximum 268 megawatts of power in a total system which exceeds 7,000 megawatts. Turner Plant and Higgins Plant in recent years have been used primarily during periods of peak customer demand because of the high costs involved in running these older oil-fired units.
In addition to the elimination of positions at both plants, other positions in the electric generation area will be phased out. As a result of these changes, approximately 175-200 positions will be eliminated between now and Jan. 24, 1994. The company employs about 5,800 workers.
The future use of these plants will be considered over the next several years. Existing peaking units located at these sites will continue to operate.
Today's announced changes are intended to offset escalating business costs and thus minimize the need for price increases. Actions in other areas of the company, geared toward improving efficiency and competitiveness, are anticipated in the coming weeks and months.
