 FLORIDA POWER CORPORATION FILES SHELF REGISTRATION
 FOR $200 MILLION OF MEDIUM-TERM NOTES
 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Florida Power Corporation, a subsidiary of St. Petersburg-based Florida Progress Corporation (NYSE: FPC), filed today a shelf registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission to register $200 million of Medium-Term Notes, Series B.
 The notes will be offered on a continuing basis through Merrill Lynch & Co., J.P. Morgan Securities, Inc. and Citicorp Securities Markets, Inc., as agents. Florida Power may also sell the notes to investors directly.
 Terms of the sale of the notes will be determined at the time of the sale.
 Net proceeds from the sale will be used to reduce Florida Power's short-term debt and for general corporate purposes.
 Headquartered in St. Petersburg, Florida Power is the state's second largest electric utility, serving about 1.2 million customers in central and northern Florida.
 The Securities and Exchange Commission has not yet declared the registration statement effective, and offers and sales of the notes may not be made prior to such time.
