FLORIDA POWER CONTINUES TO READY FOR COMPETITION

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Florida Power Corporation announced today additional position reductions to streamline operations and increase efficiencies to remain a strong competitor in the evolving electric utility industry.
Florida Power is trimming its corporate administrative staff by about 60 positions in its continuing efforts to decrease costs and become a commanding competitor for the generation, transmission and distribution of energy.
Changes include several managerial and support positions in the financial and administrative services areas. Some duties have been combined and spans of control have been broadened to streamline operations. An exhaustive internal analysis of how we do things identified ways to work smarter.
These changes are part of Florida Power's continuing efforts to position itself for future changes in the industry and to minimize the need for price increases. Already, Florida Power has announced it will eliminate 175 to 200 positions in its power plants and electric generation area. Actions in other parts of the company are expected in the future.
Florida Power Corporation is the principal subsidiary of St. Petersburg-based Florida Progress Corporation (NYSE: FPC) and serves 1.2 million customers in central and northern Florida.
