FLORIDA POWER & LIGHT: ACTION CUSTOMERS CAN TAKE THAT
 WILL FACILITATE SERVICE RESTORATION
MIAMI, Aug. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- In some cases there are situations in hurricane damaged neighborhoods where customers can take action to speed the process of electric service restoration.
For example, if you have damage to the area and equipment above and around your electric meter, you may need to call a licensed electrician to make repairs before FPL crews can re-energize the power line to your house.
To evaluate the need to call a licensed electrician, look at the area near your electric meter where the power line is or would connect to your house. If you see damage to the house connection, to the pipe that carries wires down the wall to the meter or damage to the metal box that surrounds the meter, you may want to call an electrician. Once a professional makes repairs to the house wiring connection -- called a weatherhead -- and to the piping and meterbox, if necessary, your house should be ready to receive electric service when crews arrive. If the meter itself is damaged, FPL will repair or replace it.
VISUAL INSPECTION SHOUL BE DONE FROM THE GROUND. DO NOT GET ON A LADDER FOR A CLOSER LOOK. DO NOT TOUCH ANY ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT OR LINES THAT MAY BE AROUND THE ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT. YOUR ELECTRICIAN SHOULD BE THE ONLY ONE TO MAKE A CLOSE INSPECTION.
By law, FPL crews are not permitted to work on home electrical wiring systems. Home electrical wiring begins at the wall of your house in the area called the weatherhead and includes the weatherhead and meter box.
If your neighbor has a similar problem, consider making your request together to allow your electrician to make the most of the visit. If you're not sure about what is needed, FPL crews will be able to advise you when they come to make repairs to power poles and power lines at your house.
