FLORIDA LITERACY COALITION TO MEET SUGARCANE WORKERS AT OKEELANTA
SOUTH BAY, Fla., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of the Florida Literacy Coalition will meet and have dinner Thursday with H2A West Indies employees from Okeelanta Corporation who are taking night classes at local schools during the sugarcane harvesting season.
The visit is part of the 1992 Florida Literacy Conference being held in West Palm Beach. Following the dinner, coalition members will visit one of the classes at Glades Central Community High School.
"We have 39 men from Okeelanta and Osceola Farms taking night classes at Glades Central and other schools," said Oscar Schneider, personnel director at the companies. "The men have great dedication. They typically work six days a week in the fields and go to school two nights per week.
"We encourage them to improve their reading skills and continue their education."
Okeelanta and Osceola pay the tuition for the classes and provide free transportation from the men's living quarters to the schools.
Coalition members are scheduled to arrive at Okeelanta at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Okeelanta is located on U.S. 27, six miles south of South Bay.
