FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION/BURDINES TEACHER OF THE YEAR
TO BE NAMED AT MAY 14 AWARDS BANQUET
MIAMI, May 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Florida Education Commissioner Betty Castor and Burdines Chairman Howard Socol will name the 1993 Florida Department of Education/Burdines Florida Teacher of the Year on Thursday, May 14, at a ceremony in Nickelodeon Studios Florida in Orlando.
Burdines will award the winning teacher with a total of cash prize of $10,000, a Lenox Crystal trophy and other merchandise. An additional $1,000 will be presented to the teacher's school.
For the fourth year, Florida-based Burdines department stores has contributed $100,000 to the state-run Teacher of the Year program. According to Castor, this gift is the single largest corporate cash contribution to Florida public schools.
In addition to the winner four other finalists will be awarded $5,000, with an additional $1,000 presented by Burdines to each of their respective schools.
This year's five finalists were chosen from more than 120,000 public school teachers throughout the state by a Department of Education appointed selection committee representing teachers, principals, parents, and the business community. The finalists are: Angel Stanford Jones of Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Miami; Cathy Blair of Tampa Palms Elementary in Tampa; Tracey Leon Bailey of Satellite High in Satellite Beach; Janet Keskinen of Green Cove Springs Elementary in Green Cove Springs; and James Thomas Barefield of A. Crawford Mosley High in Lynn Haven.
Each finalist is selected on the basis of superior ability to teach and communicate knowledge of the subject taught, professional development, philosophy of teaching, and outstanding school and community service. The most important qualification is the teacher's superior capacity to inspire a love of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities.
"The purpose of the Florida Teacher of the Year Program is to honor one teacher who is representative of all excellent teachers in the state. With so many fine educators among our teaching force, it is surely difficult to single out the most deserving, but these individuals have gone the extra mile," Castor said.
In addition, 64 district winners will each receive $750 from Burdines, plus $250 each for programs at their respective schools.
The May 14 banquet will begin at noon followed by the award presentation at 1:30 p.m. Nickelodeon Studios -- "the place where Nick is made" -- are located at 1000 Universal Studios Plaza. To gain access to Nickelodeon Studios, enter Universal Studios property on Turkey Lake Road and stop at Gate 3 where security personnel will provide directions to Soundstage No. 19.
