FLORIDA'S THREE LEADING BANKS JOIN IN HURRICANE FUND
MIAMI, Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Barnett, First Union and NationsBank

-- Florida's three leading banking organizations -- announced today they will join to combine their Red Cross challenge funds, to create a total of $1.6 million. With public donations, the combined fund can raise $3.2 million.
Recognizing the need to rebuild the hurricane-devastated South Florida area, Barnett, First Union and NationsBank agreed to be partners, joining disaster relief efforts they had previously announced separately.
"It is gratifying to see these important institutions join together for the good of the people of South Florida," said Elizabeth Dole, president of the American Red Cross.
The goal is to insure contributions are matched up to this new total no matter whether the donation is made through Barnett, First Union or NationsBank (NCNB and C&S).
"I know this group of major financial institutions is proud to announce this partnership. To date, through the banks' earlier individual efforts, in excess of $800,000 has been raised in public contributions," said Guy Marvin, chairman of the Northeast Florida Chapter of the American Red Cross.
To make contributions that will be matched by the three banking institutions, the public may drop checks off at any office of Barnett, First Union or NationsBank (NCNB or C&S) or mail them to any of these addresses:
Barnett Banks, Inc., Box 44300, Jacksonville, FL 32231-4300
First Union Bank of Florida, Inc., Box 2565, Jacksonville, FL 32203
NationsBank, Box 31900, Tampa, FL 33631-3900
The funds all go to the Red Cross of Florida for the purchase of food, clothing, personal items, medical supplies and other expenses directly benefiting Hurricane Andrew victims.
"We're very gratified that this matching fund has had such an overwhelming response. I think people recognize that their contributions can be doubled," said the Red Cross' Marvin.
The three banks also issued an invitation to other financial institutions to join them in the challenge fund in amounts of at least $100,000. Those that wish to join should call marketing directors at any of the three banks -- James Covington, Barnett Banks, Inc. 904-791-7730; Jim Robertson, First Union, 904-361-3147; or Bob Garrison, NationsBank, 813-224-5290.
