FLORIDA'S REALTORS OPPOSE SERVICES TAX

 FLORIDA'S REALTORS OPPOSE SERVICES TAX
TALLAHASSEE, Fla., May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The 70,000 members of

the Florida Association of Realtors strongly oppose Gov. Lawton Chiles' plan to tax Floridians billions of dollars. Chiles has proposed a net increase of $2.46 billion, of which $147 million would come directly from real estate services.
A sales tax on real estate services, pest control, surveying, financial and many other related services would inflate the cost of housing at a time when homebuyers are already finding it difficult to purchase a home. Other taxes expected to impact small businesses, and ultimately the consumer, include consulting, phone answering, architectural, as well at subjecting Subchapter S corporations to the corporate income tax.
On top of these costs, companies would have to add significant dollars just to administer what could be called an administrative nightmare. These are the extra monies required to compute and report such a large, ill-defined tax. Put simply, the mechanisms and resources to adhere to it are not in place.
Other concerns of realtors include taxing associations and the disadvantage taxing services puts on small businesses. Small businesses don't have in-house attorneys, accountants and other professionals so they would have to pay taxes large businesses won't.
