FLITTIE ELECTED SENIOR EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER OF NWNL COMPANIES

FLITTIE ELECTED SENIOR EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT
AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER OF NWNL COMPANIES
MINNEAPOLIS, April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- John H. Flittie has been elected senior executive vice president and chief operating officer of The NWNL Companies (NYSE: NWN).
In his new position, Flittie will assume responsibility for all of NWNL's business operations. They are the individual life insurance and annuity operations of Northwestern National Life Insurance Co., Northern Life Insurance Co., and North Atlantic Life Insurance Co. of America, and the employee benefits, pensions and retirement plans, and reinsurance operations of Northwestern National Life.
Flittie's election to his new position will enable NWNL President and Chief Executive Officer John G. Turner to focus primarily on external relations, investment operations and enterprise strategy.
"NWNL is fortunate to have someone with John Flittie's depth and breadth of industry experience," Turner said. "He has spent his entire career in the life insurance and employee benefits businesses, so he is eminently qualified to direct NWNL's insurance operations."
At the same time that Flittie assumes responsibility for all business operations, all of NWNL's pension operations are being combined under the direction of Donald L. Swanson, vice president-retirement plan division, who reports to Flittie.
Flittie, 55, joined NWNL in 1985 as senior vice president and chief financial officer. He was named executive vice president and chief financial officer in 1989, and in 1991 he became senior executive vice president. He is also a director of three NWNL subsidiaries: North Atlantic Life Insurance Co., Northern Life Insurance Co., and Washington Square Capital.
Prior to joining NWNL, Flittie was national director of actuarial and benefit consulting services with one of the country's leading accounting firms, where he was also a member of the management committee. He has 34 years of experience in life insurance and employee benefits.
Swanson joined NWNL in 1979 as manager of pension administration and after several successive promotions, became vice president of pensions in 1983. Most recently, he was named vice president of the Retirement Plan Division when that division was formed in 1990.
Northwestern National Life, Minneapolis; Northern Life, Seattle; and North Atlantic Life, Jericho, N.Y., are subsidiaries of The NWNL Companies. The NWNL Companies is a Minneapolis-based holding company specializing in the life and health insurance and annuity businesses.
