FLEMING ELECTS STAUTH PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

 OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla., March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Robert E. Stauth has been elected president and chief operating officer of Fleming Companies, Inc. (NYSE: FLM). He was previously executive vice president -- division operations.
 Mr. Stauth is advancing into the position formerly held by John Moll, who retired last November. Dean Werries continues as chairman and chief executive officer, but is relinquishing the additional post of president which he assumed upon Mr. Moll's retirement.
 "Bob Stauth has a wealth of operating experience and a proven track record that make him extremely well qualified to assume this important responsibility," said Mr. Werries. "He has the ability to formulate and execute strategies, to foster teamwork and motivate associates, and to develop effective relationships with retail customers. All of these characteristics give us confidence that he will be an outstanding president and chief operating officer," Mr. Werries stated.
 Mr. Stauth has been associated with Fleming for nearly 20 years. As executive vice president -- division operations, he has had overall operating responsibility for most of the company's food distribution centers. Previously he was senior vice president -- Western region.
 Before that he served four years as vice president -- Arizona operations, heading up the Phoenix division. He also served for seven years as president of the Houston division. In addition to his increasing responsibilities with Fleming, Mr. Stauth's background includes several years of supermarket chain experience.
 In 1988, Mr. Stauth received the chairman's award for outstanding achievement in division operations. He is a graduate of Kansas State University and completed the Stanford University Executive Program in 1989.
 Devening Elected Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer
 R. Randolph Devening has been elected vice chairman and chief financial officer. He was previously executive vice president and chief financial officer.
 Mr. Devening will continue to be responsible for corporate finance and control, financial planning, information systems, insurance, legal activities and corporate communications. He has been associated with Fleming for a total of 11 years and has served as executive vice president and chief financial officer since 1989. He is also a member of the board of directors.
 "Randy Devening has played a major role in the growth and sound financial management of this company," said Mr. Werries. "His election as vice chairman is well-deserved recognition for his expertise and guidance in this important area."
 Mr. Devening is a graduate of Stanford University and earned an MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. He is a director of Arkwright Mutual Insurance Co. and Fred Jones Manufacturing Co.
 Simpson Elected Corporate Vice President -- Western Region
 Dixon E. (Dick) Simpson has been elected corporate vice president -- Western region with direct responsibility for seven divisions in California, Arizona, Utah, Oregon and Hawaii. He was previously president -- Phoenix division.
 The regional vice presidency was formerly held by Mr. Stauth, who has continued to direct the company's Western operations since becoming executive vice president -- division operations last July. "It is necessary to have a full-time leader for this large and important region," said Mr. Stauth. "Dick Simpson is the logical choice for this job. He is an experienced executive who is highly respected by affiliated retailers, industry people and fellow associates."
 Mr. Simpson has been involved in every phase of operations in Phoenix since joining the company in 1987. He served as manager of retail services, sales manager and operations manager prior to being named division president.
 Before joining Fleming, Mr. Simpson served for 20 years with another large wholesale food distributor. He holds a BS degree in business and an MBA from the University of Utah.
 Gunther Named President -- Phoenix Division
 Ray Gunther has been named president -- Phoenix division, stepping up from operations manager. He succeeds Mr.Simpson in this position.
 Mr. Gunther has extensive management experience at both the wholesale and retail levels. For the past four and a half years he has worked in the Phoenix division, serving first as merchandising manager and then operations manager. He has been with Fleming since 1986 and served as dairy merchandising manager at the corporate office in Oklahoma City before transferring to Phoenix.
 Prior to joining Fleming, he had 16 years of experience with a major supermarket chain where he eventually rose to group vice president of merchandising. He is a business administration graduate of Loyola University in New Orleans.
