FLEMING, DAVIDS ANNOUNCE ASIAN JOINT VENTURE

 OKLAHOMA CITY, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Fleming Cos. Inc. (NYSE: FLM) and Davids Holdings, the leading food wholesaler in Australia, have formed a joint venture to devel ?full-line food distribution centers in Asia.
 The two companies will be partners in Davids Investments Asia Pte Ltd., which will form partnerships with local companies in several Pacific Rim countries. Typically, these local companies will be the leading supermarket operator in their countries. Davids Investments will own 49 percent of the local joint ventures and will manage the distribution centers. Agreements have already been reached with companies in Singapore and Malaysia.
 Dean Werries, Fleming's chairman, said the joint venture is an important part of the company's aggressive international strategy.
 "We are excited about the prospects of working with Davids Holdings because we are very compatible and share identical business philosophies," he said. "This joint venture gives us a strong position in Pacific Rim countries where supermarkets are rapidly developing market share.
 "Fleming will benefit in several ways," Werries said. "We'll profit from equity investments in local distribution activities and our export business will grow more rapidly. We also hope to expand our procurement of products from this part of the world."
 John David, executive director of Davids Holdings, said that "Fleming Companies would help the new venture with private label product development, technology and other direct assistance. We see Fleming as a good source of product, expertise and help in developing the Asian region."
 Fleming provides food, food-related products and services to more than 4,800 stores in 36 states, the Caribbean, Mexico and other Central and South American countries.
