FLEET FINANCIAL GROUP BANKING FRANCHISE DIRECTING
COMMUNITY SERVICE EFFORT AMONG REGION'S YOUTH
PROVIDENCE, R.I., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Fleet Financial Group's (NYSE: FLT) seven banks this week launched a regionwide civic involvement program to help young people develop leadership skills while simultaneously serving their communities. Called Fleet Youth Leaders, the program is being introduced in Fleet's New York and New England banking markets over the next two weeks, it was announced by Robert W. Lougee, Jr., Fleet Financial Group vice president.
"The role that each of us can play in improving our communities has never been more urgent than it is today," Lougee said. "We're confident that the Fleet Youth Leaders program will inspire countless young people to address today's critical issues and prepare them for complex challenges in the future."
Lougee explained that Fleet Youth Leaders is the newest community project of the Fleet Youth Initiative (FYI), a five-year-old companywide series of programs that support character-building and educational activities to benefit children, teens and their parents. To encourage diverse participation in the programs, multilingual recruitment materials are available in Spanish, Portuguese, Cambodian and Vietnamese, among other languages.
To highlight the start of the eight-month Fleet Youth Leaders program, Fleet banks and schools in selected cities will conduct forums on current events and cultures, and hold student assemblies to promote leadership. Program enrollment for students in grades six through nine will continue until Dec. 1. Fleet Youth Leaders teams will consist of five to eight students. Working with adult advisors, each team will create and implement a plan that helps meet a specific needs of its community.
The youth service projects will continue until the spring of 1993, when Fleet Youth Leaders participants will convene for leadership seminars and recognition ceremonies in each state. Seven of the region's top-performing Fleet Youth Leaders teams will travel to Washington, D.C. to visit Congress and tour the nation's capital.
"The Fleet Youth Leaders program will show that young people have many similar concerns as adults," Lougee said. "The lasting benefit is that these youngsters will soon realize how their own special talents can be instrumental in improving things they truly care about."
