FLEET DELIVERY FIRST MODEL '230' HELICOPTER FUSELAGE

FLEET DELIVERY FIRST MODEL '230' HELICOPTER FUSELAGE
FORT ERIE, Ontario, Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Fleet Industries, a division of Fleet Aerospace Corporation, today, proudly announced the "on schedule," completion of the first Model 230 Helicopter Fuselage for Bell Helicopter Textron Canada.
Fleet's Fort Erie facility is responsible for manufacturing the complete cabin structure prior to final assembly operations at Bell Helicopter's facility in Mirabel, Quebec. This sleek new intermediate twin engined helicopter is the first Bell aircraft designed, developed and built in Canada.
On June 27, 1990 Fleet was awarded their initial Bell Helicopter contract which required the first unit to be delivered by mid January 1992. Fleet's schedule performance has been critical to Bell Helicopter's first scheduled delivery in 1992. The first contact phase represents 20M dollars in sales to Fleet and has established the baseline for a long term, 15 year agreement with Bell Helicopter providing future sales potential exceeding 175M.
In a period when many manufacturing sectors are reporting declines and employment reductions, the Bell Helicopter Program has enabled Fleet Industries to stabilize manpower levels. Initial Bell production rates are directly responsible for the employment of 70 people with peak manpower levels anticipated to exceed 100 during 1992.
Attendees at today's rollout ceremony included Lloyd Shoppa, president, Bell Helicopter Textron Canada, senior Bell Helicopter Textron personnel, representatives of the federal, provincial and municipal governments, Fleet's supplier base, local media and all Fleet employees.
Don Mertel, Fleet's president and general manager recognized the cooperative approach taken in this initiative by congratulating those Fleet and Bell Helicopter employees who worked directly on this program, as well as the efforts required by all employees in maintaining schedule commitments on behalf of all customers.
Mertel credited the employee's skills and experience developed through 60 years of airframe manufacturing, coupled with a fierce determination to succeed in meeting this aggressive schedule and overcoming the inevitable set backs incurred with program start ups.
The Bell Helicopter Model 230 Fuselage joins and complements the established family of Fleet products which includes wing components, fuselage sections, door assemblies, radar antenna and satellite structures produced under contract for a customer base which includes: Boeing, McDonnell Douglas, Bell, de Havilland, Lockheed, Raytheon, Bronswerk, Hughes and Spar Aerospace among others.
