FLEET BANK KICKS OFF JANE DOE 1993 FUNDRAISING EFFORTS

BOSTON, Jan., 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Twenty-eight Massachusetts women were murdered by their husbands or boyfriends in 1992 and the statistics are getting worse. To help combat the rise of domestic violence, the Jane Doe Safety Fund, a project of the Massachusetts Coalition of Battered Women Service Groups, and Fleet Bank today kicked-off the Jane Doe 1993 fundraising efforts at the bank's 28 State St. location.
Fleet Bank of Massachusetts President, John P. Hamill and the Fund's Executive Director, Carolyn Ramsey were joined by the group's co-chairs, WBZ-TV anchor Liz Walker and WHDH radio personality Marjorie Clapprood, to officially launch the Jane Doe Safety Fund's 1993 "Corporation of the Month" campaign.
Fleet Bank was the first corporation to commit its resources to this fundraising effort. For the month of January, all of the more than 160 Fleet branches in the state will support the Jane Doe Safety Fund by selling $1 candy bars and donating the proceeds to the Fund. The Jane Doe Safety Fund is currently seeking businesses to volunteer as "Corporation of the Month" to help raise monies for the remainder of the year.
"Last April, Fleet was among the first companies to support our efforts to combat domestic violence with a significant contribution to the Jane Doe Safety Fund," said Ramsey. "Fleet has been a forerunner in recognizing the significance of this issue on the corporate level. We appreciate Fleet's continued attention to this matter and hope their actions serves as a role model in corporate responsibility."
"We hope to heighten awareness of the severity of domestic violence among our customers and employees, and it is our expectation that through this promotion we will raise close to $20,000 towards this Fund's community education campaign," said Hamill. "We encourage other area businesses to use their resources to join us in the fight to combat domestic violence."
All proceeds from the sale of candy will be used by the Jane Doe safety Fund to create an atmosphere of intolerance towards domestic violence through community education and public awareness.
Jazzercise, of Milford, has initiated a statewide promotion in all Jazzercise locations during the month of February.
Since 1978, the Massachusetts Coalition of Battered Women's Service Groups has made tremendous headway in supporting and advocating an end to domestic violence and in helping to make women's lives safer through a network of shelters and working with legislators and public policy makers to pass laws to protect battered women.
Fleet Bank of Massachusetts, with more than 160 banking offices and in excess of $8 billion in assets, is a subsidiary of Fleet Financial Group (NYSE: FLT), a diversified financial services company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, with processing.
