FLEET BANK IS THE CORPORATE SPONSOR
OF THE 1992 NEW ENGLAND SPRING FLOWER SHOW
BOSTON, March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Fleet Bank is the corporate sponsor of the 121st annual New England Spring Flower Show presented by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society at the Bayside Exposition Center in Boston from March 14-22.
In keeping with the show's theme, "Rediscover the Americas," exhibits will include more than 60 landscapes and gardens in peak bloom from North, South and Central America. Additionally, the exhibit will feature exotic flowers, such as rare South American orchids.
The special highlight of the show will be the Rain Forest Exhibit, a theatrical display that includes a nine-foot waterfall, echoing the sounds of forest streams that flow into a rain forest pool. This dramatic exhibit comes complete with a tropical rainstorm recreated with special effects of thunder, lightning, rain, fog, and the tropical birds of the Amazon under a dense canopy of trees.
Fleet Bank serves as underwriter for the exhibit's special effects and will also sponsor the Rain Forest Festival on March 20 featuring live Brazilian music, native foods, and workshops. In addition, through a special educational program sponsored by the bank, fourth-grade students in the Boston public schools were invited to receive rain forest curriculum kits to create their own miniature rain forest terrariums. These mini rain forests will be woven together into an entire landscape which will be displayed at the show. Teachers and students who participate may attend the show free of charge, and students may bring a parent at no cost.
"The Massachusetts Horticultural Society is extremely grateful to Fleet Bank for supporting the Flower Show," said James S. Hoyte, interim executive director. "We're very pleased that the bank shares our commitment to environmental and horticultural education."
As part of the festival, 25 Agri-Business students from West Roxbury High School, Fleet's school/business partner, were selected by the Horticultural Society to participate in the "Rain Forest in a Bottle" program. This unique program teaches participants how to create their own mini rain forest inside recycled soda bottles. "Rain Forest in a Bottle" also features the Massachusetts Horticultural Society's traveling Plantmobile, which will visit a number of Boston public schools to introduce the program to sixth and seventh grade students.
"It is our hope that future generations may appreciate the rain forest and understand its critical importance to our planet," said Dennis M. Murphy, executive vice president and community banking division manager. "We are particularly proud to sponsor this environmental education program as it enables the Horticultural Society to bring a little bit of the Flower Show to students who may otherwise have not had the opportunity to attend."
Founded in 1829, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the art and science of horticulture. Its Spring Flower Show is the oldest continually operated exhibition of its kind in the world, and attracts 150,000 visitors annually.
