FIVE WESTERN SITES ADDED TO FEDERAL SUPERFUND LIST

FIVE WESTERN SITES ADDED TO FEDERAL SUPERFUND LIST
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) today announced its decision to add five sites in the western region to its final Superfund National Priorities List (NPL). Of these, three of the sites are located in California, one in Guam and one in Hawaii.
"After careful and thorough review of the environmental problems at these sites, and consideration of all the public comments received, we have determined that the appropriate studies and cleanup activities should proceed under the oversight of the Superfund program," said Jeff Zelikson, U.S. EPA's hazardous waste division director for the western regional office.
The five sites placed in final states in Region 9 include:
Ralph Gray Trucking Co., Westminster, Calif.
McCormick & Baxter Creosoting Co, Stockton, Calif.
Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA), Pasadena, Calif.
Pearl Harbor Naval Complex, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii
 Andersen Air Force Base, Guam
Sites are proposed or placed in a final status as part of the periodic review and update of the Superfund program. The NPL is U.S. EPA's list of hazardous waste sites potentially posing the greatest long-term threat to public health and the environment. U.S. EPA identifies and ranks NPL sites according to threats to nearby populations through actual or potential contamination of soils, groundwater, surface water or air.
With today's decision, there are now 105 final and five proposed sites in Region 9. Region 9 includes the states of Arizona, California, Hawaii, and Nevada and the Pacific Islands. Nationwide, there are 1,208 final and 28 proposed sites on the NPL, bringing the total number of proposed and final NPL sites to 1,236.
