FIVE MASSACHUSETTS COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES SIGN WITH MCI
BOSTON, Nov. 5, /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: MCIC) today announced agreements with five Massachusetts colleges and universities -- Boston College, Mt. Holyoke College, Springfield College, Clark University and Tufts University -- to provide a range of telecommunications services. The contracts are valued at more than $6.5 million.
Clark, Mt. Holyoke, Tufts and Springfield have signed up for MCI's Academic Spectrum, MCI's full service telecommunications offerings customized for the university market. These Massachusetts colleges and universities have selected from a variety of services offered through the customized program that includes: Vnet, MCI's virtual private network; MCI Card; MCI 800 Service; MCI 900 Service; MCI Operator Services for dorms and payphones; MCI Mail; MCI Forum, a conference calling service; and MCI Switched 56, one of MCI's family of virtual private data services which offers bandwidth on demand for applications such as imaging and videoconferencing for distance learning.
"Telecommunications is revolutionizing the university environment and contributing to the bottom line, not only at these five Massachusetts schools, but at schools throughout the nation," said Jonathan Crane, National Accounts president. "Colleges and universities are able to not only provide premier service, but also to better manage telecommunications expenses."
The three-year agreement with Mount Holyoke calls for MCI to provide turn-key Academic Spectrum services that include Vnet, MCI Operator Services, MCI Card, MCI 800 Service, MCI Forum and third-party billing services. Springfield College contracted for similar services under a three-year agreement.
Similarly, Clark University has signed a two-year contract using MCI Academic Spectrum to improve services for faculty, staff and students, while lowering cost for long distance services. Clark has implemented MCI Operator Services, MCI Card and new applications using MCI Forum for teleconferencing. The Boston College contract is for MCI's Star Card which provides calling card privileges on- and off-campus.
According to the three-year contract with Tufts University, MCI will provide Vnet services for faculty, administration and students, MCI Operator Services and the MCI Vnet Card, called the "Jumbo Card," after the school's mascot elephant. The school will use MCI's Configuration Manager to activate and deactivate calling cards, insuring security and easy administration.
Headquartered in Washington, D.C., MCI offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through a state-of-the- art worldwide telecommunications network. The company, with 1991 revenue of nearly $10 billion, is the nation's second-largest long distance provider and has more than 60 overseas offices in 55 countries.
