Byline: - Orith Goldberg

Five teens were taken to local hospitals - two in critical condition - after their vehicle rolled several times as they hurriedly tried to leave a private road when confronted by a rancher early Thursday, authorities said.

A 16-year-old girl airlifted to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center was listed in fair condition Thursday afternoon, said hospital spokeswoman Tiffany DeVall.

A 15-year-old girl airlifted to Northridge Hospital Medical Center was expected to be released, said hospital spokeswoman Kate Preston. ``She was very lucky,'' Preston said. ``She's awake and doing OK.''

The three other occupants were were taken to hospitals in stable condition.

The incident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. on Browns Canyon Road, about eight miles north of De Soto Avenue, said California Highway Patrol Officer Fernando Martinez.

The teens had been riding in a Ford Explorer on a private road that bisects a cattle ranch when they were confronted, Martinez said.

The 16-year-old female driver, a Canoga Park resident, lost control of the vehicle as she hurried to leave. Three passengers who were not wearing seat belts were thrown out.
