FISHERIES MANAGEMENT IN MEDITERRANEAN AND BLACK SEAS.

The General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) is meeting for its annual session in Split, Croatia, until 18 May. The EU has decided to table three proposals in line with scientific advice for the area, announced the European Commission, on 14 May: a management plan for the whole Adriatic region; measures to deal with overfishing and fishing for juveniles in most areas falling within the GFCM's competence; and a specific proposal to enhance the management of fisheries in the Black Sea. Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki stated that "we are ready to work with everybody in the region and we feel the GFCM is the appropriate body to foster such cooperation".
