FISH AND GAME CANCELS CHECKPOINT

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- A Department of Fish and Game checkpoint scheduled for the weekend has been cancelled, the department announced today.
The checkpoint had been scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., along the main road leading into the state Grizzly Island Wildlife Area. The wildlife area lies south of Fairfield in Solano County and adjacent to Suisun Bay. Tidal marshes and wetlands are prominent features of the area's topography. Anglers, hunters and the general public all make good use of the various outdoor recreational opportunities there.
State wildlife officials cancelled the operation after noting a decrease in waterfowl hunting activity at the wildlife area and after recent storms turned the planned checkpoint site into a muddy quagmire.
Fish and Game checkpoints require passing vehicles to pull off the pavement into designated parking areas while wardens and biologists inspect for game, hunting and/or fishing licenses and the appropriate sporting tags. The stations act as a deterrent to wildlife violations, allow Fish and Game to collect biological data from harvested game animals and present the department with opportunities to provide the public with educational materials explaining Fish and Game laws.
