FIRST UNION TO SPONSOR TOUR DU PONT

 GREENSBORO, N.C., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- First Union National Bank of North Carolina will be a major sponsor of the Tour Du Pont when the premier cycling event comes to North Carolina for the first time, May 14-16.
 The 1,100-mile 11-day race will end in front of First Union's Greensboro Main office at 300 N. Greene St.
 "As a major business in the Piedmont, First Union is very pleased to help bring the Tour Du Pont to the Triad," said Jerry Highsmith, First Union's Greensboro regional executive. "The Triad is an excellent host site for such a highly visible, elite sporting event, and First Union is proud to help make it happen.
 "We're especially excited that the grand finale of the whole event is right in front of our building, and you can bet First Union folks will be out in force to help cheer the racers on."
 First Union is no stranger to sports sponsorships. First Union also sponsors the First Union Grand Prix in Atlanta, a 125-mile international bicycling event, and the First Union 400 in North Wilkesboro, one of NASCAR's premier short-track races. First Union is also the official bank of the Charlotte Hornets and sponsors two minor league baseball teams in North Carolina, the Durham Bulls and the Charlotte Knights.
